From Geelong to the world

The Cotton On Group is continuing to solidify its dominant market position in the Southern Hemisphere with the opening of its first Brazilian store and regional headquarters, marking the 1028th door to open south of the equator.
Cotton On Group Chief Executive Officer, Peter Johnson, says the launch of the Cotton On brand in Brazil is the latest milestone in a successful eight year expansion into international markets.
“We have a fantastic track record of identifying regions where we know the value, trend and quality proposition of our products will resonate in the local market”, Mr Johnson says.
Such success was illustrated by the Group’s arrival in South Africa in 2011, with store numbers reaching over 100 within a 36 month period, including the opening of 27 stores in 27 days in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2013.
The continued expansion of its operations has seen the Cotton On Group grow from humble beginnings 23 years ago as a family-based business in Geelong, to become the largest value fashion group in Australia and one of the fastest growing retailers globally.
Driven by a big dream and the powerful idea of delivering great product at a price people can afford, the Cotton On Group now consists of eight brands, over 1300 stores in 17 countries and a broad product offering including adults’ fashion, sleepwear, footwear, intimates, active, kidswear, party, youth wear and stationery.
With Sao Paulo achieving a new country sales record for day one of trade, plans are underway for another store launch before the end of 2014 and additional store openings in the country in early 2015.
Mr Johnson says ongoing growth in South America is part of the business’ broader global strategy.
“The Cotton On Group has a proven history of strong growth trajectory, having opened over 1000 stores since 2007”, he says.
“Our plans for the future are no different and we are always exploring opportunities to further expand our footprint”.
