Johan Van Wyk: Cotton On Group remembers former South Africa Country Manager Johan Van Wyk

Cotton On Group mourns loss of Johan Van Wyk

13th June, 2019

A major contributor to the Cotton On Group and an influential leader within the Africa retail market, Johan Van Wyk will be remembered for his generous spirit and retail acumen.  His passing this week has been a shock to our global family and we are deeply saddened by the news.

Johan joined the Group eight years ago as our first team member in Africa, spearheading the country’s growth and expansion from South Africa to Namibia and Botswana. He had a significant impact on our business both locally and globally.

During his time as Country Manager, Johan nurtured an operating model perfectly suited to our African team and customer, spending a great deal of time on the frontline in our stores. This strategy saw our African operations establish itself as the biggest and most successful market outside of Australia; a testament to Johan’s expertise and commitment to bringing the Group’s global vision to life.

Most importantly, Johan was a dedicated leader who built an exceptionally talented and passionate team. Johan was also a tireless supporter of our philanthropic efforts, in particular the launch of the Cotton On Foundation’s new school project, Ethekwini Primary, in South Africa.

Johan stepped down from his role as Country Manager earlier this year and remained an active and valued advisor to the Cotton On Group Board.

Peter Johnson, CEO, the Cotton On Group reflects on Johan’s incredible contribution; “The Cotton On Group family is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague. Not only was Johan an amazing retail leader who shaped the way our business grew throughout Africa, he was a remarkable human being who cared deeply about those around him. Those who worked with Johan could speak to his contribution to their life, not only as a colleague but most importantly as a friend.

We send our deepest sympathies to Johan’s loved ones, including his wife and three children”.
